Temu Haul
Unpacking the E-Commerce Maverick
Online shopping platform Temu is rewriting the playbook on end-to-end visibility for suppliers, retailers, and customers alike, and it serves a masterclass in data capture, generation, and utilization. Our latest report explores the key capabilities that have allowed Temu to leapfrog its competitors while keeping costs outrageously low.
What does Temu sell? The better question: what doesn’t Temu sell?
A few curiosities you’ll find: a dust-collecting goo for $1.97, a jawline-toning device for $2.98, and a pet pacifier for $1.60. The online shopping platform sells products that are as outrageously diverse as they are cheap, and the company is taking the retail industry by storm.
Owned by Chinese company PDD Holdings, which also operates the local e-commerce behemoth Pinduoduo, Temu launched in the US towards the end of 2022 and is now in markets across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. In less than a year, the Temu app amassed 100 million active users in the US and earned roughly 75% of Target.com’s revenue, gobbling up a sixth of the dollar store market along the way.
And they have no intention of slowing down: Temu has set a $60 billion sales goal for this year, which would more than triple the roughly $18 billion it collected in 2023. Achieving this aggressive target would largely narrow the gap with fast-fashion giant SHEIN, which outpaced Zara in revenue last year by making $45 billion.
However, while inflation-sensitive consumers across the globe have embraced Temu with open arms, the online shopping platform is also facing questions over a litany of issues, including the lack of transparency around its operations and the amount of waste it generates. And with regulators cracking down on tariff loopholes and questionable labor practices, Temu’s hockey stick growth may be near its end.
But there’s still plenty to learn from the company that has flooded social media channels globally and spent millions on ads at back-to-back Super Bowls.
Temu's Secret To Low Prices
In our latest report, now available to Zero100 members, we explore the key capabilities that have allowed Temu to leapfrog its competitors while undercutting them on price.
Enhanced Data Capture
Temu serves as a masterclass in not just the utilization of demand-sensing data but also data generation and data capture. Though researchers have long tracked browsing and purchasing habits to offer more personalized recommendations to customers, Temu goes one step further, funneling customer data back to manufacturers to optimize production in near real time. This approach aligns existing products with customer preferences and informs what products are being produced.
Gamified Demand Signals
Far from transactional in feel, Temu attempts to entertain consumers by employing a variety of techniques to incentivize users to engage with the platform. For example, upon signing up, users are offered free gifts or coupon codes and can participate in various in-app games. The more time users spend on the app, the more data can be gathered about their preferences, and the more likely they are to buy something. Thus, Temu captures both active and passive buyers, all while generating a profile and demand signal with every click.
A Fully Hosted Marketplace
Temu leverages a consignment model, requiring its more than 150,000 merchants to agree on wholesale pricing and to ship goods in bulk. The platform then handles the listing, marketing, fulfillment, customer service, and pricing, paying the seller once someone orders their product. This model gives Temu control over quality, selection, and pricing while sellers benefit from supply chain services.
Agile Cross-Border Logistics
Temu has flipped Amazon’s instant delivery philosophy on its head, emphasizing low cost rather than expediency. While delivery speed is still valued by consumers, Temu competes on cost through a flexible logistics operation enabled by relaxed delivery timelines, optimized air freight, de minimis loopholes, and strategically placed warehouses.
The full report analyzes these four Temu supply chain tactics in greater depth and charts the trends that have contributed to its meteoric rise. We’ve also included three big plays for leaders looking to outgame the maverick.
