Hinton’s AI Doomsday Forecast: Seven Operations Rebuttals

How a closed-loop model of operations can turn AI fears into fixes.

The “Godfather of AI,” Geoffrey Hinton was recently interviewed on the future of AI. His grim forecast was summarized by Business Insider in seven big takeaways

Are we doomed? Not if we build AI with a closed-loop model of operations

Seven Fears, Seven Fixes

1. Job destruction: Hinton’s view on technology taking people’s jobs sounds familiar, but he says it’s different this time. Since AI can be smarter than humans, any work we can do, AI can do better.  

That might be true if all work was brainwork. But it’s not. Field repairscustomer service, and supplier development are all essential to customer satisfaction. AI is a big assist for these jobs, but unlikely to replace the human EQ cementing customer loyalty and regenerating revenue streams. Investors have baked 30-40% productivity gains into equities, but valuation models reflect earnings projections, not just cost reduction.  

2. Income inequality: The system will break if people can’t buy what the economy makes. When the rich get richer at the expense of everyone else, we all lose. 

The rationale is again familiar with precedent reaching back to Karl Marx. But businesses can’t maximize profits by starving their own customers, and governments normally intervene when necessary. Universal Basic Income policies are one tactic that may emerge – but government isn’t the only way to mitigate inequality. Engaging consumers with operational strategies for lower costs could open new segments with innovation in planning, logistics, packaging, and repairs. Company examples, including CostcoIKEAPeloton, and Hewlett Packard, are green shoots of this thinking. 

3. AI will outsmart us: Machines learn so much faster than humans that we can’t compete.  

Hinton’s projection is irrefutable if “outsmarting” is defined as analytical or generative “thinking.” Even NVIDIA should worry if former Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is right about quantum computing. But is this bad? Machines outperform humans in many dimensions without breaking our ability to create and thrive. Autotune hasn’t destroyed the music industry, and e-commerce grows alongside brick-and-mortar retail. Technology is speeding up the infinite loop for the better. 

4. AI ruins education: The critical thinking needed for comparative literature or economics is so easily delegated to ChatGPT that educators everywhere cry for the future.  

And yet, AI has become a ubiquitous productivity tool for operators simplifying supplier contracting, improving manufacturing process design, and demand forecasting. I regularly poll live audiences on their use of AI at work and over 90% now raise their hands. These real-world use cases are patterns kids will learn from parents and bring into school. No one misses the days of long division on paper, yet division lives on. 

5. AI makes war easier to wage: Freed of worry about soldiers dying, nasty dictators will be quicker to attack with an army of drones. 

This sounds logical, but we’ve made this mistake before – with nuclear power. The destructiveness of nuclear weapons spawned a vigorous anti-nukes movement in the 1980s which crippled our ability to decouple economic growth from GHG emissions. Six critical technologies will determine the future of operations and society. One of them is power, and another is AI. Their ability to enable sustainable growth could outweigh the risk of warmongers. Operations leaders can help by demonstrating how to manage the risk-reward balance benevolently

6. The Matrix problem – they’ll fight back: AI agents don’t just take orders, they act. What if they turn on us? 

They might, if we don’t build them safely. The same could be said of fire. Without checks, fire destroys. When systematically managed in furnaces, forges, and engines, however, fire sustains modern life. Operators building AI and agentic systems across this infinite loop engineer for efficiency, but also for safety. “Three points of contact” is an operations mantra for a reason. We understand risk. 

7. Taxes are good: In fact, our technology foundations were largely built with public money.

Fair enough. For AI to achieve its positive potential, we will need regulation, standards, and taxes as the rule-of-law basis for investment. Operations leaders ask only that compliance be transparent and consistent.
